Attendance Matters

At Perivale Primary School, we believe that every school day matters. Regular attendance supports children’s well-being, helps them make the best possible progress and gives them every opportunity to reach their full potential.

We monitor attendance regularly and work closely with parents and carers to support children in developing positive patterns of attendance and punctuality. We also believe in recognising and celebrating success and encouraging our pupils to become Attendance HEROes.

Being Here, Every Day, Ready and On Time means children can make the most of every learning opportunity, feel part of their school community and start each day ready to succeed.

Every child has the right to an education. By creating positive attitudes towards school, learning and attendance, we can help our children develop habits that will support them throughout their education and beyond.

 

Why is good attendance important?

  • Regular attendance supports better progress and achievement.
  • Children are able to keep up with their learning and build on what they have previously learned.
  • Being in school regularly helps children develop strong friendships and a sense of belonging.
  • Children become more confident with school routines and expectations.
  • Good attendance supports children’s social, emotional and academic development.
  • Positive attendance and punctuality habits help prepare children for secondary school and their future.

 

How we support and promote good attendance

As a school, we will:

  • Monitor pupils’ attendance and punctuality regularly.
  • Follow up unexplained absences and contact parents and carers where necessary.
  • Keep families informed about their child’s attendance and punctuality.
  • Work in partnership with families where attendance becomes a concern and offer support where appropriate.
  • Regularly remind our school community about the importance of good attendance and punctuality.
  • Share attendance information through school communications and pupils’ annual reports.
  • Celebrate and recognise positive attendance and punctuality through our assemblies and school rewards.
  • Celebrate our weekly Attendance HERO Award, linked to our school values.
  • Work with the Local Authority and relevant attendance services where additional support is required.

Our Initiatives to Encourage Good Attendance

At Perivale Primary School, we believe that good attendance deserves to be recognised and celebrated. We have a range of initiatives throughout the year to motivate our pupils, celebrate success and encourage everyone to become an Attendance HERO – Here, Every Day, Ready and On Time.

Attendance HEROes

Our Attendance HEROes help bring our school values to life. Each week, postcards are sent home to recognise and celebrate children who demonstrate our values alongside positive attendance.

Class Attendance Celebration

Each week, we celebrate class attendance during our school assembly. The results are also proudly displayed on our attendance boards in the school hall and main office, encouraging a little friendly competition between classes!

100% Attendance Recognition

At the end of each term, we recognise children who have achieved 100% attendance, celebrating their fantastic commitment to being in school every day.

97%+ Attendance Raffle

Every half term, children who achieve 97% attendance or above are entered into our special attendance draw, with the chance to win a bike at the end of the school year!

Through these initiatives, we aim to make attendance positive, rewarding and something to celebrate, while helping our pupils understand just how important every day at school is.

How Can Parents and Carers Support Good Attendance?

Parents and carers play an important role in helping children be Here, Every Day, Ready and On Time.

  • Create a good routine – Regular bedtimes and morning routines help children arrive rested and ready to learn.
  • Prepare the night before – Have uniform, bags and PE kits ready to avoid a morning rush.
  • Be on time – Allow plenty of time to get to school before the gates close.
  • Keep appointments outside school hours – Where possible, arrange routine appointments after school or during the holidays.
  • Talk positively about attendance – Help your child understand why every school day matters.
  • Speak to us – If you are experiencing difficulties with attendance, please contact us. We are here to work with you and offer support.
